Dec 1 Benefit + Comic Book Release

GO had our annual benefit on December 1, and it was a smashing success!

We released our comic book, designed for West African populations, about cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine. Our goal is to get this education tool into the hands of every Nigerian teenager in 2019 and reduce the 14,000 preventable deaths occurring there annually.

Read the Stanford Scope Blog about this innovative project. Please contact us if you have ideas/connections with regards to funding further development and distribution of this work.

First Public Oncology Unit in Belize

“Global Oncology is not only helping improve cancer care but most importantly it is offering hope to a whole country.”

Dr. Ramon Yacab, Belizean oncologist

GO made great strides this year towards launching the first public oncology unit in Belize which is on target to open in 2019 as an outpatient cancer treatment facility within the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

We convened a multidisciplinary team–from Stanford, UCSF, Duke, and Boston Children’s Hospital–to collaborate with colleagues at KHMH and Belizean oncologist Dr. Ramon Yacab on carrying out this endeavor. Nurses will begin chemotherapy-administration training onsite in January 2019.

A unique aspect of this cancer-care unit will be GO’s Directly Observed Care program–an innovative patient navigation model for accompanying patients through their care journey and removing barriers to accessing care.
