Sangeeta Bhatia, M.D./Ph.D is a cancer researcher, MIT professor, and biotech entrepreneur who works to adapt technologies developed in the computer industry for medical innovation. Receiving degrees from Brown University, MIT, and Harvard, Bhatia trained as both a physician and engineer, and her laboratory leverages ‘tiny technologies’ of miniaturization tools to yield inventions with new applications in medical diagnostics, drug delivery, infectious disease, and tissue regeneration. Bhatia co-wrote the first undergraduate textbook on tissue engineering, has published over 180 papers papers, and holds patents for 40+ inventions such as microlivers that model human drug metabolism, liver disease, and interaction with pathogens, as well as a suite of nanomaterials that can diagnose, monitor, and treat cancer and other diseases. She and her over 150 trainees have launched 10 biotechnology companies with 70+ commercial products at the intersection of medicine and miniaturization.
Bhatia consults for industry, government, and academic organizations, and is an active and passionate advocate for diversity in science and engineering. Bhatia has received multiple honors including Mentoring and Diversity awards from Harvard, the Lemelson-MIT Prize for Inventors, and the Heinz Medal for groundbreaking inventions and advocacy for women in STEM fields. She has been recognized by a large group of interdisciplinary organizations, including being an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Inventors, the American Academy of Arts and Science, and Brown University’s Board of Trustees.
Bhatia has a number of distinguished professional affiliations, as she is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and the John J. and Dorothy Wilson Professor at MIT’s Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES) and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at MIT. Bhatia is the Director of the Marble Center for Cancer Nanomedicine, and a member of the Ludwig Center for Molecular Oncology – both part of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT. She is also an Affiliated Faculty member of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, an Institute Member of the Broad Institute, and a Biomedical Engineer at the Brigham & Women's Hospital.
